The World's Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair, was organized in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s landing in America. Social leader and philanthropist. Appointed President of the Board of the Worlds Columbian Exposition and went to Europe to represent the Fair and was particularly successful in Belgium and Italy. James W. Scott was born in Wisconsin and was raised in Galena (Ill.). He was best known as the publisher and business manager of the Chicago Times-Herald and the Chicago Evening Post. He was a patron of the arts and was instrumental in ensuring that the World's Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago. His sudden death from apoplexy shocked the Chicago community in April 1895.
